Living By The Mustard Seed Parable

I have the opportunity to meet uniquely wonderful individuals in my job. It's one of my favorite parts. Each of them sharing their own story, talents, and passions.

During the last wedding I photographed, I noticed Beth [the bride] had a dainty silver necklace tied around her bouquet, displaying what looked like a marble. I asked her what the marble signified and her response warmed my heart.

"It's my mustard seed".

I responded by asking her to tell me more. Her response was this......

"Have you ever heard of the mustard seed parable? It's how I try to live my life."

We were on a timeline, so I got a detail shot of the necklace, made a mental note to look further into the parable, and then moved on with the wedding day.

After doing some research and reflecting, I am so humbled and inspired by Beth and this message she chose to share with me that day.

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches."

— Matthew 13:31–32

What a beautiful thought....that kindnesses of all magnitudes start from just the smallest of beginnings. That each and every one of us can do our part in growing this "mustard seed" with simple, small acts of kindness and grace.

And that as long as faith is the foundation of each of these small acts/seeds of kindness, joy will be brought into the world.
